Checklist – What you Need for an Amazing Russian Shashlik Party

Here’s a list of things you need (or are recommended) to enjoy the most amazing Russian shashlik party you’ve ever experienced!

  • mangal (what you make the fire in)
  • shampurs (the skewers)
  • a ‘cage’ (for cooking meat with bones or some vegetables that you don’t/can’t put on the skewers)
  • coal
  • matches or a cigarette lighter
  • paper (to start the fire – you’ll find smaller pieces of wood/twigs around your shashlik party area to help start the fire)
  • fire accelerant (if you’re not very good at making a fire without it)
  • at least 2 litres of water (to put out the fire when you’ve finished cooking and to wash your hands if you haven’t used gloves to put the meat on the skewers)
  • rubber/plastic gloves
  • 2 sharp knives (one for meat, one for vegetables)
  • a metal fork (for removing the meat from the skewers)
  • plates (for guests, but also for putting the meat and salad vegetables on
  • knives and forks (plastic is ok, but not the cheapest as they snap when you’re cutting the meat)
  • cups (plastic or paper – for wine/vodka/juice/any other drinks you bring with you)
  • bottle opener (for the wine)
  • plastic bag to use as a bin
  • sheet or some kind of cover to put on the ground for the food and other things
  • or a folding table
  • camping chairs (foldable) if you think the ground is going to be uncomfortable
  • tea towels
  • kitchen paper
  • badminton set
  • football
  • frisbee


  • meat
  • vegetables for cooking (mushrooms, slices of tomatoes, zucchini, red and green peppers, etc)
  • vegetables for eating raw (carrots, cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, green onions, radishes, red and green peppers, etc)
  • cheese
  • cold meat (ham, salami etc)
  • bread
  • ketchup
  • mayonnaise
  • salt and pepper
  • fruit (grapes, cherries, etc)

Put everything together as you like it, and you’ll have the best shashlik party ever!
